The Independent Pilots Association is the only UK based pilot union that is truly independent. The union was established for the benefit of all pilots across the UK aviation industry, its inception not being driven by the demands of any one particular airline. We were the first union to be run by pilots, for pilots. As our Board of Directors’ work for a variety of airlines and companies, they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience for the benefit of our members across the fixed wing and rotary industry.
As a pilot’s union, we have a proven track record in acting for members across many airlines, either through company processes or the Employment Tribunal and Courts. We represent pilots on the day to day issues that affect them in their employment.
There are many advantages of IPA membership. As we do not outsource our services, we provide a consistent and efficient high standard of work from people who understand the industry and issues affecting pilots. Our members can speak to knowledgeable, dedicated staff 24/7 regarding a number of issues such as medical repatriation insurance, flight duty allowance and legal expenses. As employees of the IPA, our only interest is to protect our members interests - whoever you fly for. As a pilot union run only for the benefit of our members, our competitive membership fees are directed where they should be – supporting our members. £30,000 of legal cover is included within full membership, and competitively priced supplementary legal cover is also available (optional), along with free emergency medical repatriation cover for all full members. By becoming a member of the IPA, you will also reap the benefits of a discounted Flight International Magazine subscription, essential reading for pilots.
We're also proud to provide our members with access to a number of unique and discounted Travel, Income Protection and Legal Expenses policies from Lumley Insurance Limited, who work with leading insurers and design policies that reflect the needs of the specialist pilot community. We offer these on a voluntary basis and more details can be found at Aircrew Benefits.
In addition to representing members on an individual basis at all levels, the IPA union is also successfully recognised by UK employers. We have experience of collective negotiations and will only accept the best possible outcomes for our members.
